The upcoming Live-Read of The Big Lebowski in Montreal is shaping up to be a “natural, zesty enterprise,” thanks to Jennifer Lawrence.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman has been assembling a team to perform the Coen brothers’ classic dude-noir at the Just For Laughs comedy festival this Friday, and with Michael Fassbender agreeing to play the role originated by Jeff Bridges, they needed an equally formidable actress to take on Julianne Moore’s Maude Lebowski.
Luckily X-Men: Apocalypse is shooting in town, and Fassbender has been recruiting. “As I heard it, Fassbender and the X-Men crew were flying back from Comic-Con to Montreal. Apparently, the whole cast is coming to watch him Friday night. He’s got a section for all his fellow X-Men,” Reitman tells EW. “We had not found our Maude, and Jennifer Lawrence wanted in. By the time they landed, we had our Maude.”
The Silicon Valley team will be represented during the Live-Read by T.J. Miller as Brandt, originated by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, show creator Mike Judge as The Stranger, originated by Sam Elliott, and Martin Starr as The Jesus, played by John Turturro. The one-night-only cast is turning into a mash-up between the mutants and the geeks, with much of the cast being rounded out by HBO’s Silicon Valley. In addition to Fassbender and Lawrence, Olivia Munn, who plays Psylocke in Apocalypse, will portray Bunny Lebowski, the role originated by Tara Reid.
