Shirley MacLaine, the Hollywood grand dame of uncensored charisma, gave Jennifer Lawrence some advice a few years back.
the 80-year-old Oscar winner mentioned that Lawrence is one of her favorite young actresses. We suggested that the two share a similar unfiltered charm in interviews, and MacLaine agreed
MacLaine said that a mutual acquaintance coordinated “a long evening” with The Hunger Games headliner so that MacLaine could “mentor her.”
“I was very impressed with how real she was and still so tied to her real life and her upbringing and her boyfriend of years,” MacLaine said. “[My advice] was mostly stuff about knowing who you are. ‘Find your identity because you are going to be in for a rough ride if you don’t.’”
After a pause, MacLaine lifted her eyebrows over her sunglasses and added “It’s going to be interesting to hear what happens with her and leading men.”

Lawrence was another story, of course. Oscar winners don’t have to audition over Vine. The Farrellys had offered her a meatier role in the sequel some time ago. Even though she had to turn that down, she knew she’d be in Atlanta shooting The Hunger Games: Mockingjay while Dumb and Dumber To was ramping up production and insisted that they all hang out. So she, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, Jeff Daniels, and a few producers went out to dinner, and then to an Empire of the Sun concert. By the end of the night, Lawrence was telling them how much she wanted to be in the movie. She was even the one who suggested the cameo after the Farrellys politely reminded her of her Hunger Games commitments.
The potential role — to appear as a younger version of Kathleen Turner’s character — was coming up quickly, though. The dinner was on a Friday. They had to shoot the scene on Monday.
“When we woke up the next morning, I figured I was going to get a phone call saying, ‘Look, I’m sorry, I can’t do this. I was out of my mind last night,’” says Peter. “But we did get that call and it was like, ‘This is awesome! I can’t wait to do this!’”
Lawrence’s involvement in the film broke in The Hollywood Reporter almost immediately.”I was disappointed that we couldn’t keep the cap on that,” says Peter, who had hoped that she was so unrecognizable in the film that audiences would only realize it after the fact. But he’s not too distraught about the reveal. That’s what happens when you put one of the hottest young actresses in your movie. “She’s still in it and we had a ball and it’s hard to feel bad about the whole thing,” he says
“She does know every line by the way,” says Peter. “Everything that Jeff Daniels said would make her giggle. There were little things that he did that reminded her of something from the movie. She would challenge us to name any line and she’d tell us the next five lines. She knew them all”.
Lawrence wasn’t the only “Hunger Games” star that got to hang out on the movie set. “Mockingjay,” the movie sequel, has a set close to “Dumb and Dumber To” in Atlanta, so she brought the entire cast of the film to this movie set and they were allowed to see parts of the movie filmed.
As for butting heads with Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss, the actor believes Snow adores her. “She wows him,” he says. “She delights and amuses him because he knows more than anything she has a particular kind of genius he’s been looking for all his life.”
